2016 NH AFL-CIO Linda Horan Scholarship Program

Linda HoranThis year, in honor of sister Linda Horan, the NH AFL-CIO will award a record amount of scholarship assistance. Members in good standing (of an affiliated local union), their spouses, children, stepchildren, or legal wards are encouraged to apply.  A minimum of four scholarships will be awarded; first place award will be $1500, second place for $1000 and a third and fourth place award for $500 each.  Any additional scholarships will be contingent on funding available.

Scholarship applicants must submit a 750-1,000 word (3 to 4 pages double-spaced) essay on the following topic:

Article Two of the United States Constitution empowers the President of the United States, with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to appoint Supreme Court Justices.  How can the appointment of a Supreme Court Justice impact labor and why is this so important today?

Essays will be judged on understanding, writing style, and significance to Labor Unions. Applicants are encouraged to draw on the experiences of their families and communities.  Two copies of the essay must be submitted; one may be a photocopy.

Those eligible are members in good standing, or the spouses, children, stepchildren, or legal wards of a member in good standing of unions affiliated with the NH AFL-CIO.    The union member must live or work in New Hampshire.

The scholarships winners will be announced on June 3, 2016.  Winners will also be honored at the NH-AFL-CIO’s annual LABOR Day Breakfast.  Winners must provide proof of undergraduate enrollment in a college, community college, university, or recognized trade school for the fall semester, 2016.

Essays and application forms must be received by the NH AFL-CIO Scholarship Committee, 161 Londonderry Turnpike, Hooksett, NH 03106, no later than 4:00 p.m., Friday May 13, 2016.
